Sponsored content

Sponsored content is paid editorial-style content a publication runs on behalf of a brand, usually marked with a sponsored, partner or promoted label.

Sponsored content looks and reads like an article but is paid for by a brand. Publications usually mark it with a label such as sponsored, partner, promoted or paid post, so readers know a commercial relationship exists. It often runs in the same layout as regular articles on the outlet's site.

Sponsored content and guaranteed press placements overlap. Both are paid, both appear in real publications, and some outlets label guaranteed features as contributed or partner content. The difference is mostly in format and labeling, which varies outlet by outlet. We tell you how an outlet handles labels before you choose it.

Used well, sponsored and guaranteed content gives you credibility proof and audience reach on a fixed timeline. Used alone, it lacks the third-party judgment that earned media carries. That is why the strongest authority plans pair paid proof with earned coverage from journalists, podcast hosts and event organizers.
